Riverside County deputy shoots and kills woman in Corona

A Riverside County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a woman early Monday morning during an argument with another person who reportedly tried to take her gun.

According to a statement from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, deputies attempted to make contact with “multiple suspects” around 1:10 a.m. in the 1000 block of West 6th Street.

“The suspect fled and officers pursued on foot,” the RSO statement said. “As officers rounded the corner of the building, the male suspect lunged at the officers and a struggle began.”

During the scuffle, the female suspect also allegedly began attacking the deputy, who then opened fire.

She was shot and taken to a nearby hospital where she later died, RSO said. Her identity has not yet been released.

After firing his gun, the deputy continued to struggle with the other individual, who “attempted to grab the gun until good people arrived and assisted in taking the male suspect into custody,” according to the release.

According to sheriff’s officials, the deputy involved in the incident was hospitalized with moderate injuries and the male suspect was treated for minor injuries.

Per police policy, the deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending completion of an investigation into the incident.

“Following notification from local authorities, the Department of Justice’s California Police Shooting Investigation Team launched an investigation pursuant to the provisions of AB 1506,” California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office said in a statement.

No further information was provided.
