Martin holds a BA and MA in English Literature from the University of Cambridge and an MA in Communications from RMIT University. He left the UK in 1987 and travelled, lived and worked all over the world before coming to Australia in 1997.

He worked in a variety of roles at Lonely Planet between 1999 and 2020, including seven years as editorial manager.

A car accident in 2010 left Martin a quadriplegic. From 2013 to 2020, he served as Accessible Travel Manager and Editorial Advisor at Lonely Planet. In this role, he published several accessible travel books, including the world’s largest collection of accessible travel online resources.

Since 2014, Martin has been a regular speaker at national and international travel conferences and events, including United Nations Tourism events.

Martin currently works as a freelance consultant, writer and editor. He recently organized the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Inclusive Tourism Workshop Series and wrote the accompanying Best Practice Guidelines. He has developed and delivered training for Tourism Australia and the World Sustainable Tourism Council.

For the past six years he has been Chair of the Board of IDEAS, a New South Wales-based not-for-profit organisation that provides information and support services to the disability community across Australia.
