Expert: International Day of Persons with Disabilities | December 3 | Newsroom

Since its proclamation in 1992 by UN General Assembly Resolution 47/3, the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) has been celebrated around the world every year on December 3. IDPD commemorations aim to promote awareness of disability issues and rally support for the dignity, rights and wellbeing of persons with disabilities. (United Nations)

Here are some experts from McGill University who can comment on the issue:

Dana Annaby, Associate Professor, Department of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy

“For young people living with disabilities, participation in everyday activities is important for their well-being and sense of belonging, yet it is primarily limited due to environmental barriers: physical, social, attitudinal and institutional. At ASPIRE Lab, we focus on developing and testing ‘real life’ youth-engaged therapeutic interventions that remove environmental barriers, cultivate their capacity to participate in activities that are meaningful to them in their context, and enable them to lead good lives.”

Dana Annaby is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical and Occupational Therapy, a Scientist at the CanChild Childhood Disability Research Center, and Director of the ASPIRE Lab (Strategic Advancing Participatory Initiatives in Rehabilitation). Her research focuses on children’s participation and well-being in everyday life, and on adolescents and young adults with physical disabilities, with a particular focus on leisure activity participation and environmental influences.
