Johnny Moore is a world-famous tech mogul, known not only for his work pioneering mobility aids for the physically challenged (including himself), but also for his side gig as a metal-suited vigilante named Caliburn. But when Johnny is found murdered and his suit stolen, his estranged childhood best friends reunite to solve the murder mystery. THE TIN CAN SOCIETY is a heartwarming and human look at the development of lifelong friendships, disability and ableism, and the destructive power of fame. This book is a superhero story as if told from Stephen King’s point of view. It’s more like a Stand by Me version of King than a horror version of King. It’s the story of one of a group of kids who grew up together becoming a superhero. The book begins with his death and the rest of the kids trying to figure out who did it.

The new creator-owned miniseries follows a group of childhood friends as they try to solve the murder of their friend, with the twist that the friend is a superhero and “tech mogul” who invents a new mobility aid for people with disabilities like himself.

Tin Can Society is a heartbreaking, tragic, and very human exploration of how a group of best friends deal with the changing dynamics as they reach adulthood. With stunning art by Francesco Mobili and elegant colors by Chris Chuckley, Tin Can Society is an unstoppable page-turning murder mystery about childhood friendships tested by ableism, celebrity, wealth, and jealousy.

Tin Can Society explores themes of disability, fame and friendship

Rick Remender’s deal with Image Comics comes to fruition

Remender has been blazing a trail for creator-owned comics throughout his career, but now he’s taking a new step with the announcement of an exclusive Giant Generator deal with Image Comics in 2023. “The Tin Can Society” is part of that print run and promise. The story is by Remender, but the work is all by Warren, Mobili and colorist Chris Chuckley. With a tight-knit cast of characters and a twist on a classic superhero tale, “The Tin Can Society” is a fresh take on beloved comic book themes. In Remender’s words:

“This is a story idea I’ve had for years, but it wasn’t until I sat down with the brilliant mind Peter Warren that the project took shape and I immediately knew he was the person to write it. This is the type of story that requires nuanced characters and heart more than anything else, two things Peter excels at. It was an absolute joy crafting the story with him. He took this tale in a very innovative direction, all because of his deep love for comics, and we couldn’t be proud of the result.

The Tin Can Society is a great book for readers looking for disability representation, mystery, family, superheroes and more.

Beyond the superhero and murder mystery twists, Tin Can Society promises to explore disability, a real-world experience that is often underexplored in comics. Mobili, the artist on the series, says, “It’s a very human story about friendship, disability, life, death, murder… and of course, there’s the superhero element!” Mobili also highlights the role of love and friendship in the series: “Starting with the love that we infuse into the books, to the love that guides the life of this group of friends. It’s the love that gives room for other emotions when life leaves scars and horrible things happen.”
