Earlier this week, a retired Los Angeles County deputy sheriff went missing while hiking on a Greek island.
Deputy Albert Carivet, 59, was last seen hiking in Almogos on June 11. Local police said he was following the route from the Asfontirite area towards Katapola when he went missing. Authorities believe he was wearing a black shirt and shorts.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Calibet was an experienced hiker and offered to assist the suspect’s family while authorities tracked him down.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Deputy Carivet’s family and friends and we hope he returns home safely,” Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said. “We are actively working with multiple agencies overseas to assist in the search for Deputy Carivet and will do everything we can to bring him home to his loved ones.”

The ministry said its homicide unit would handle the case on the ground while Greek authorities would carry out a search and rescue operation. A missing persons alert has been issued in Greece.
A State Department spokesman said federal agencies are working closely with local police to assist in the search for Carivet. The spokesman said the State Department’s top priority is the welfare and safety of Americans traveling abroad.
Carivet began working for the Sheriff’s Department on April 16, 1998. He officially retired in 2018 but continued to work for the department as a part-time employee to help alleviate staffing shortages.
Police urged anyone with information about his disappearance to call detectives at (323) 890-5500.
