Trinity College Dublin (TCD) is proud to announce Disability Week 2023, dedicated to promoting understanding, recognition and celebration of the diverse experiences of our disabled student and staff community. This year’s event is particularly noteworthy as it will be led and inspired by individuals whose voices and experiences we wish to highlight.

TCD Students’ Union has arranged for Independent Senator Tom Cronan to speak about a current project he is working on in the House of Commons. He will talk about his advocacy work to increase support coverage for disabled people in Ireland, particularly in higher education institutions. The talk will take place in An Matheir in Printing House Square from 11.30am to 12.30pm. Disability Hub Director Declan Treanor will also talk about the support currently available to TCD students. There will be a short reception afterwards with tea, coffee and sandwiches.
In collaboration with The Ability co_op and TCD Students’ Union, An Meitheal in Printing House Square will become a hub of artistic expression from 5pm to 7pm on 27 November. The exhibition will feature artworks by the University’s community of talented disabled students and staff. To add depth to the visual spectacle, poets will be explaining their poems and artists will be commenting on their work on the evening of the 27th.
The Chancellor will kick off the event on November 27th at 6pm.
Declan Treanor will curate powerful segments where students with disabilities share their personal experiences, challenges and successes – this storytelling platform aims to humanize the myriad experiences that often go unheard.
An innovative initiative by Kieran Lewis and TCD Sense interns showcased Trinity’s TCD Sensory Map. The thoughtfully designed map highlights a variety of unique spaces across campus, from quiet places for reflection to vibrant social areas. This initiative reflects the University’s commitment to inclusivity, ensuring every individual can find a space where they feel comfortable.
The TCD Students’ Union has organised a careers event specifically designed for students with disabilities, which will feature a range of booths and talks providing students with valuable information about their rights in the workplace after university. There will be a specific talk on their legal rights as a disabled worker, ensuring students know what they are entitled to in their future careers. Eithne Coleman, Senior Occupational Therapist in the Disability Hub, will also be in attendance and will be speaking about the internships on offer within TCD for students with disabilities across campus.
This will take place on November 30th at Printing House Square, An Meitheal, from 11am to 1pm.
Under the direction of the Vice-Chancellor, the facade of the University building overlooking College Green will be lit up in purple, the international colour of persons with disabilities, to symbolise solidarity, understanding and support for the disability community.
Sunday 3rd December, International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
Their fun run will take you along the iconic 3k route around campus and all participants will receive a special edition t-shirt. The event is open to all students, staff and community members and features an accessible route. You can also choose to walk or run the route. TCD Sports will hold its annual Reindeer Run on Dec. 5 at 1 p.m.
Dr Alison Doyle and Dr Kieran Lewis will present an overview of the ADHD research study in Higher Education, which they conducted in collaboration with Dr Olive Healy from the School of Psychology. There will also be information on the Trinity ADHD Clinic pathway and the student-led ADHD support group hosted by Disability Services. The event will conclude with a panel discussion featuring representatives including students, Trinity staff and ADHD Ireland. As a leader in publishing valuable research on ADHD, Alison will delve deeper into the complexities of the condition. This session will be informative for those new to ADHD as well as those living with the condition.
The information session will be held on December 7th from 2pm to 4pm in An Meitheal, Printing House Square.
Taken together, Trinity Disability Week 2023 is testament to the College’s dedicated commitment to creating an inclusive environment in which all individuals, regardless of ability, can grow, learn and contribute. The week is a vivid reminder of the rich tapestry of experiences that students and staff with disabilities bring to the TCD community, and to the world at large.
