Dylan Ottani, an island native and Nantucket High School Class of 2022 member, is currently participating in a transcontinental bicycle trip across the United States from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. Ottani will be riding the route, known as the “North Route,” with 20 other cyclists.

Ottani, a junior at the University of Colorado, is taking the “Journey of Hope” bike trip as part of the Ability Experience, a charity initiative run by Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. Founded in 1977, the fraternity aims to instill a lifelong passion for service in its members and to help empower people with disabilities.

Each year, more than 100 men embark on a journey across the U.S. to test their limits, spread awareness and celebrate the capabilities of all. According to the fraternity, three routes begin on the West Coast, with teams traveling a total of 12,000 miles across the summer before arriving on the Capitol Lawn in Washington, D.C., for the end of the life-changing event.

Along the way, the team will spread its disability awareness message through local media and stop at partner organizations to “bring joy to friends in the disability community,” according to the order.

Participants will travel an average of 75 miles per day, passing through and visiting many national historic sites, including the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Parks. Along the way, they will “connect with local groups that serve people with disabilities, dance, play games and sing campfire songs.”

Each rider has pledged to raise $6,500, and you can support Ottani’s race by clicking here .
