Richard Llewellyn Deaf Artist Grant Winners Announced

Named after South Australian disability advocate Richard Llewellyn, the annual grant supports the development and project delivery of professional artists who are deaf or disabled.

The 2024-25 competition offered four categories, with submissions judged by a multidisciplinary jury of artists with disabilities and arts professionals.

Funding highlights include:

A $6,000 Project Grant to emerging author Emily O’Sullivan to develop a children’s chapter book manuscript focusing on innovation and connection between children with and without disabilities; A $9,337 Project Grant to mid-career Kangaroo Island-based visual artist Philip Baines to exhibit his sculptures in the group exhibition Behind Closed Doors at Fleurieu Arthouse in McLaren Vale; A $10,000 Professional Development Grant to Norveline Mackenzie-Stewart to develop her songwriting and performance skills with a mentor; A $24,979 Project Grant to No Strings Attached Theatre of Disability to create a new major play, HIGH, about university life for Rachel High, who is believed to be the first person with Down’s syndrome to complete a degree in Australia; A $25,000 Project Grant to Tutti Arts, which provides international residency opportunities for artists with learning disabilities and neurodevelopmental disorders. The pilot program will see a Tutti artist undertake a residency in Seoul, South Korea, followed by a Korean artist undertaking a residency at Tutti Arts.

It is expected that the funded activities will facilitate the employment of 18 artists and 16 arts workers.
