Stolen vehicle suspect flees into home after intense chase in San Fernando Valley

Police are pursuing a suspect in a stolen vehicle in the San Fernando Valley.

It’s unclear what exactly started the pursuit, but officers from the San Fernando Police Department could be seen pursuing the driver above SkyCal and on surface roads in North Hollywood, Pacoima and Sun Valley.

About 30 minutes after the pursuit began, California Highway Patrol officers confirmed the vehicle was stolen.

The driver of a red Toyota Prius swerved around a large trailer truck as it was backing into a parking lot, nearly hitting another vehicle that was not involved in the accident, before driving up onto the curb.

At one point, the driver drove straight through a gate and into what appeared to be a dead end in front of a tire lot at the intersection of Fleetwood Street and Tujunga Avenue in Sun Valley, before crashing through a barrier, shattering the windshield and damaging the front of the vehicle.

The driver then sped away with police following closely behind.

At approximately 8:15 p.m., the driver entered the northbound lanes of I-405 in Van Nuys, eventually switching over to the eastbound lanes of CA-118 in Mission Hills, then traveling southbound on I-5 at Arleta, driving recklessly and dangerously while weaving between other vehicles at speeds of up to 110 mph.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m., the driver parked in front of the closed gate of what appeared to be an apartment building at Wingate Street and Sunland Boulevard, then abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

The suspect was seen being tracked by a LAPD helicopter spotlight as he ran through the complex. As he ran, he came across a partially open garage and slipped under the door, undetected by pursuing officers.

This is an ongoing story, check back later for more details.
