Los Angeles man dies after getting caught in bed of stolen truck, police say


A Los Angeles man died after clinging to the bed of a stolen truck in South Los Angeles after it was crashed into another vehicle, police said.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Jose Roman Orona, 54, was celebrating the Fourth of July holiday outside his home in the 700 block of 97th Street in the Westmont neighborhood around 12:45 a.m. Friday when someone got into his truck and drove west on 97th Street. The suspect ran a stop sign at the intersection with Vermont Avenue and crashed his truck into another vehicle traveling north on Vermont Avenue, the Los Angeles Police Department said. The suspect got out of the vehicle and fled.

Paramedics pronounced Orona dead at the scene.

Police said the suspect remained at large the following day and described the suspect as a man with curly or bushy hair. He was wearing dark clothing at the time of the crime, police said.
