A portion of the lower Angeles Crest Highway in the mountains north of Los Angeles has reopened after being closed for more than a year due to storm damage and repair work.
The California Department of Transportation announced Monday that State Highway 2 in Angeles National Forest has reopened between Mount Wilson Redbox Road and Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Road, a section that has been closed since a damaging storm in March 2023.
Major repairs were required, including:
Scale slopes to remove loose rock and material. Dispose of landslide debris. Rebuild slope curtain protection systems. Repair washed-out slopes and replace drainage. Repair washed-out roads.
The same section of State Highway 2 will be closed again for a few days in August for final roadwork, and a portion of the upper mountain road remains closed between Islip Saddle and Grassy Hollow for repairs to storm damage (see map below).
