LOS ANGELES — A suspect in a stolen vehicle who led Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies on a hot pursuit from East Los Angeles to the Pico-Union area was shot by a deputy after the pursuit ended and was in critical condition Wednesday night.
The suspect struck multiple vehicles, including a sheriff’s patrol vehicle, during the high-speed pursuit, which began in the early afternoon when the suspect hijacked a sedan in East Los Angeles and drove onto the Long Beach (710) Freeway.
According to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Patricia Thomas, the roughly hour-long pursuit ended around 2:47 p.m. when the suspect crashed into a utility pole at the intersection of Vermont and Venice Avenues in Los Angeles.
Video footage from the scene shows that with several police patrol vehicles behind him and pinned against a pillar, the suspect accelerated and backed into the patrol vehicles, causing a large plume of smoke.
ABC7 reported that deputies opened fire on the suspect, hitting him multiple times and shattering the rear window of the sedan.
The suspect had one arm out the window before the shots were fired, and after the shooting, he was quickly dragged out of the sedan and handcuffed.
Thomas said no weapon was found, but that reversing his vehicle and crashing into a police car constituted “assault with a deadly weapon” on a police officer.
The suspect was taken to the hospital and is reported to be in critical condition, according to the sheriff’s office.
No officers were injured, Thomas said.
Anyone with information about the suspect or the shooting is asked to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit at 323-890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or submit a tip at www.lacrimestoppers.org.
