NEW DELHI: Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh on Monday apologised for a video he posted on social media in which he and his India Champions teammates were allegedly mocking a person with a disability. The video, taken after India Champions defeated Pakistan Champions to win the World Championship of Legends, shows Harbhajan, Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh limping and holding their backs.

The video has brought disability rights organisations into disrepute, with the National Platform for Disability Rights (NPRD) calling the act “utterly shameful”. In response, Harbhajan posted a lengthy clarification on social media. “To our colleagues who have complained about Taubatauba’s recent video posted on social media after winning the England title, I want to be clear: we did not want to hurt anyone’s sentiments. We respect every individual and community,” Harbhajan said.
“And this video is just to show our bodies after 15 days of continuous cricket. Our bodies are sore. I don’t mean to insult or offend anyone. But if people think we have done something wrong then that’s all I can say. Sorry guys. Let’s stop this here and move forward. Stay happy and healthy. Love to you all. Regards,” he further added.

“Words are lacking to condemn such behaviour especially from people who are considered national heroes. Such degrading behaviour only exposes their callousness and rudeness,” the NPRD said. Earlier, Arman Ali, general secretary of National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Persons with Disabilities, had urged the BCCI to take action against the players in the video. “It is disgusting to see India’s top cricketers mocking a disability. It is a shameful and cruel act by players who are revered by the masses. Shame on them. We urge the BCCI to take immediate note of this,” he said.
