This is the fourth consecutive year that U.S. Steel has received this honor.
PITTSBURGH–(BUSINESS WIRE)–U.S. Steel (NYSE: X) today announced that for the fourth consecutive year, it has again achieved a top score of 100 on the Disability Equality Index®, a leading corporate benchmarking tool for disability equality, earning it recognition as a “Best Place to Work for People with Disabilities.” By completing the Index each year, U.S. Steel demonstrates its commitment to strengthening inclusion across the organization and enhancing what it sees as a clear business advantage — its ability to leverage the skills of people who identify as people with disabilities.

“Being recognized as a ‘Best Workplace for Disability Employment’ for the fourth consecutive year sends a powerful message that U.S. Steel is unwavering in its commitment to full inclusion throughout our operations,” said U.S. Steel President and CEO David B. Barritt. “Achieving this recognition underscores our determination to advance disability employment throughout the mainstream of our company, and it is even more meaningful that this recognition comes one year after I signed Disability:IN’s CEO Letter on Disability Employment.”
Maintaining a workplace where all team members feel accepted, valued, safe, protected, seen and heard is an integral part of U.S. Steel’s culture of caring. The inclusive culture across the organization is supported and strengthened by Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) such as SteelABILITY, which not only raises awareness and understanding of disability-related issues but also has contributed greatly to the company being certified as a “Best Workplace for Disability Inclusion” four times.
“We participated in the Disability Equality Index as a way to measure and validate the success of our efforts to fully inclusivize people with disabilities,” said Mona Dine, general manager of corporate HR and chief diversity officer. “We’re pleased to announce our top score of 100 and to celebrate the efforts of the SteelABILITY ERG, both of which reinforce our reputation as a company with DE&I clearly woven into our business strategy.”
Each year, the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD), the largest disability rights organization in the United States, and Disability:IN, a global business disability inclusion network, jointly release a comprehensive index to help companies develop, measure, and evaluate the concrete actions they are taking to achieve disability inclusion. Developed with the support of an advisory board of diverse business leaders, policy experts, and disability advocates, the index helps companies positively impact disability unemployment/underemployment and create long-term value for employees and shareholders.

About the Disability Equality Index®
The Disability Equality Index has become the leading independent, third-party resource for annual benchmarking of companies’ disability inclusion policies and programs and is now trusted by more than 70 percent of the U.S. Fortune 100 companies and nearly half of the Fortune 500. These companies must increasingly consider how new global reporting mandates and stakeholder expectations surrounding social and corporate governance factors impact their operations, culture, reputation and financial performance.
The Disability Equality Index is an objective, reflective, proactive and sensitive disability assessment tool designed to help companies advance inclusion practices. It is a comprehensive benchmark that helps companies develop a roadmap of measurable and concrete actions across five assessment categories: culture and leadership, enterprise-wide access, hiring practices, community engagement and supplier diversity. Participating companies receive a score on a scale from 0 to 100, and those who score 80 or above earn the title of “Best Workplaces for Disability Inclusion” for the benchmark year.
Based on the results of the two-year Global Disability Equality Index pilot, a scoring benchmark was launched and in 2024 seven new countries will join the United States: Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Japan, Philippines and the United Kingdom. Now in its 10th year, the Disability Equality Index has grown nearly seven-fold since 2015, expanding from 80 companies in the first year to 542 in 2024. The 2024 edition received a total of 753 submissions from the eight benchmarked countries.
