OTR International Film Festival holds film screening for Disability Pride Month
Updated: July 16, 2024, 4:35 PM EDT
Thank you so much, Kelly. As you know, July is Disability Pride Month and we’re celebrating it at the Over-the-Rhine International Film Festival with a screening of “Evelyn’s Amazing Life.” It’s a moving film that tells the story of a gamer with Duchenne muscular dystrophy who has had a very positive impact on the lives of other gamers. To get you to talk more about this, TT erm, Festenstein, I just want to make sure I understand correctly, excuse me, Rob Festenstein and TT Guernsey. Yes, everyone, thank you so much for being here today. I’m glad you’re here. Tell us a little bit about TT. Can you give us a little bit more information on what to expect at the screening of the film? It should be next week. Yes, the screening is next Wednesday the 24th at 6:30pm at the Kenwood Theatre. They’re going to be screening the same film at multiple theaters that night. I’m really looking forward to it because I wanted to make sure I had the opportunity to be in front of as many audiences as possible. Well, I was lucky enough to see the film at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It was at Sundance that Netflix picked up the film. This film is remarkable, that’s why it’s in the title. Um, but this is a really powerful story about someone who is part of the disability community and yet finds a way to have a really amazing impact on gamers and the larger community around the world. I’d love to hear more about this, Rob, and I’d love you to come on. Can you tell us a little bit about what the disability celebration events will be like next week? Thank you. The Independence Alliance will be hosting two programs in conjunction with Disability Pride Month next Wednesday at 1pm at the Walnut Hills Library. There will be a public town hall meeting with policymakers who are directly involved in creating policies that affect people with disabilities at the state and local level. And on the 27th, we’re hosting a very special program at the new Deer Park Library in Deer Park from 12pm to 4pm, “You Can’t Talk About Us Without Us.” Of course, it’s a disability pride celebration, with special art and open mic events and more. It’s completely open to the public. Anyone who wants to can join. When you say disability, pride, you mean pride for people with disabilities, right? Yeah. So, TT, tell us a little bit about why this film was chosen. Obviously, this film focuses on a gamer with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and it touches the hearts of a lot of people with Duchenne muscular dystrophy here in the greater Cincinnati area. But why is this film so special? When I saw this film at Sundance, it really struck me. Because, again, it was such an interesting story. It’s a documentary, and there are a lot of documentaries in general that focus on the disability community. But this film, I felt, was also open to the gaming community. Half of the film actually takes place in the gaming world and the reality of the gaming world, and it gives you the opportunity to see and imagine, to some extent, what it would be like for someone with a disability to be able to be active and be able to be integrated into the larger world. And, again, this is just an incredibly beautiful film to just watch. But, again, the impact that he had on that community is even more special. What do you guys take away? This could be for you. What do you want people to take away this week, next week? I think the biggest message we want people to hear is that people with disabilities are no different than you and me in living full and inclusive lives in the community, and that not all disabilities are visible, there are and are many barriers out there. We deserve a world where there are no barriers for people with disabilities to succeed. Rob and TT, thank you so much for letting us know what you guys will be working on next week, just to scratch the surface of this issue. I looked up the trailer online. There isn’t a ton of information online yet about this film, but hopefully we’ll be able to see it next week. Again, there will be a screening of this film. It’s next Wednesday, July 24th at the Kenwood Theater. Tickets are available at OTR FILM FEST, DOT ORG. Again, OTR FILM FEST DOT ORG and more information about Disability Pride can be found at DISABILITY PRIDE CINCY, ORG, I know this is a lot of information. We’ll also put it on our website, WLWT.COM.
