Downtown Los Angeles trash fire spreads to five commercial buildings


A massive fire in downtown Los Angeles spread to several nearby buildings before firefighters got it under control Friday morning, and a Los Angeles Fire Department firefighter was injured while battling the blaze.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the fire damaged a total of five buildings, with two completely destroyed.

The fire started in an open warehouse at 683 South Kohler Street near Seventh Street and burned for more than five hours, spreading to several buildings on the block.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, firefighters responded at about 2:07 a.m. and began defensive and offensive efforts to extinguish the blaze, which spread to a complex of buildings at 747 South Kohler Street.

It took more than 170 firefighters about five hours to put out the blaze.

One firefighter was taken to hospital in stable condition with a knee injury. No other injuries were reported.

Firefighters remain on scene to continue extinguishing hot spots and cooling material beneath the rubble, and fire officials said smoke could be seen at the scene throughout the day.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
