At least three fires broke out in Los Angeles County on Friday afternoon as hot, dry weather is expected to continue through the weekend.
In Palmdale, firefighters were battling a 300-acre brush fire near the corner of North 35th Street East and East Avenue Q. In Angeles National Forest, the Fork Fire was burning and quickly grew to 75 acres in the East Fork area of upper Glendora.
The Los Angeles Fire Department also reported a 10-12 acre brush fire near the 210 Freeway in Tujunga.
“In terms of potential fires, we’ve just seen a couple of fires in the last hour or two,” said Brian Lewis, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard.
Heat warnings are in effect through Wednesday for mountain areas of the Antelope Valley, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties, where temperatures could reach 106 degrees Fahrenheit. Low humidity is expected to continue through at least the weekend.
Temperatures are expected to drop across the coastal plain and valleys.
The hot, dry weather makes it easier for fires to break out, but conditions are not yet severe enough to trigger a red flag warning, Lewis said.
In the Antelope Valley, firefighters were “making good progress” in extinguishing the blaze, known as the Deer Fire, said Luis Garcia, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department. He said structures could be “impacted” but would not be at risk.
The Fork Fire has caused the closure of East Fork Road between Highway 39 and Glendora Mountain Road, according to a social media post from the Angeles National Forest. The national forest account also reported evacuations had been conducted in the area, but did not provide further details.
