Walmart to offer carts for disabled shoppers in all stores

The company says Caroline’s Cart will be available in all Walmart stores in the U.S. by January. (Walmart)

The nation’s largest retailer plans to provide all of its stores with special carts designed to reduce the need for caregivers to push both carts and wheelchairs while shopping.

Walmart said it plans to offer Caroline’s Carts in all of its roughly 4,600 U.S. stores by January.

Caroline’s cart looks like a typical shopping cart, but it has a large seat with a five-point harness that faces the person pushing the cart. The seat can accommodate people weighing between 35 and 250 pounds.

Walmart said each supercenter will have at least two carts and each Neighborhood Market store will have at least one, but stores can request more.

Previously, only about 20% of Walmart stores had the carts, according to the company.

“The decision to expand to all stores reflects Walmart’s commitment to diversity and inclusion and is in response to feedback from employees and customers,” a company spokesperson said.

Walmart officials said they will begin distributing 500 to 1,000 Caroline’s Carts to stores each month starting in May and will continue distributing them through January.

Walmart said the change will see it roll out more than 8,000 Caroline’s Carts across its U.S. store network.
