SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Hundreds of people with disabilities enjoyed free boat rides on the bay Sunday with the help of boat owners and Marine Corps personnel.
Sunday was a day of celebration for Silver Gate Yacht Club, as hundreds of San Diego people with disabilities participated in the 62nd annual Wheelchair Regatta, an event that offered a tour of San Diego Bay for area residents who don’t otherwise have the opportunity to spend time on the water.

About 350 participants and their guardians set sail for this year’s event.
Guests in wheelchairs were lifted from the pier into boats by about 100 Marines, and 20 volunteer boats guided them on tours around the bay.
“Growing up in San Diego, I always enjoyed being on the water,” says Ryan McConaughey.
The wheelchair regatta has allowed him to do just that.
“It was so much fun to be back on the water and it’s nice to relive those memories again,” McConaughey said.

His friend, Neven Hart, echoed similar sentiments: “When you have an accident, it’s nice to know that there’s a community out there that’s helping you get back to doing the really cool things that you didn’t think you could do at first.”
The Wheelchair Regatta is funded, run and delivered by the generosity and enthusiasm of our members and volunteers – at no cost to care agencies or guests.
