FORT WORTH, TX / ACCESSWIRE / July 29, 2024 / For the ninth consecutive year, American Airlines has been named one of the Best Places to Work for Disabilities in 2024, receiving the highest possible score of 100 on the Disability Equality Index® (DEI). DEI exists to help companies make a positive impact on unemployment and underemployment of people with disabilities.
“We are honored to be recognized as a Best Place to Work for Hiring People with Disabilities and to receive the highest score possible on the Disability Equality Index,” said Cedric Rocamore, American Airlines’ Chief Diversity Officer. “This recognition reaffirms our unwavering commitment to fostering an environment where people of all backgrounds and abilities are welcomed, valued and celebrated. We are committed to building and fostering an environment where team members of all abilities feel they can thrive.”
DEI was launched in the US in 2015 as a joint initiative between Disability:IN and the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) and is recognised today as the most powerful disability inclusion assessment tool for business. Completing a DEI allows companies to demonstrate their commitment to disability inclusion and equality, as well as broader societal issues.
“On the 10th anniversary of the Disability Equality Index, we are incredibly proud of the 542 domestic and international companies that are taking an active role in leading progress towards disability inclusion and setting a benchmark for others to follow,” said Jill Horton, President and CEO of Disability:IN. “These companies’ dedication to fostering an inclusive work environment not only attracts top talent, but also drives innovation and creates sustainable performance in today’s global marketplace. Together, we are creating a future where everyone can contribute and thrive,” said Jill Horton, President and CEO of Disability:IN.
Globally, there are 1.3 billion people with disabilities. Disability is a natural part of the human experience and crosses boundaries of age, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status and other demographics.

About the Disability Equality Index®
The Disability Equality Index has become the leading independent, third-party resource for annual benchmarking of companies’ disability inclusion policies and programs and is now trusted by more than 70 percent of the U.S. Fortune 100 companies and nearly half of the Fortune 500. These companies must increasingly consider how new global reporting mandates and stakeholder expectations surrounding social and corporate governance factors impact their operations, culture, reputation and financial performance.
The Disability Equality Index is an objective, reflective, proactive and sensitive disability assessment tool designed to help companies advance inclusion practices. It is a comprehensive benchmark that helps companies develop a roadmap of measurable and concrete actions across five score categories: culture and leadership, enterprise-wide access, hiring practices, community engagement and supplier diversity. Participating companies receive a score on a scale from 0 to 100, with companies that score 80 or above earning the title of “Best Places to Work for Disability Inclusion” for the benchmark year.
Based on the results of the two-year Global Disability Equality Index pilot, a scoring benchmark was launched and in 2024 seven new countries will join the United States: Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Japan, Philippines and the United Kingdom. Now in its 10th year, the Disability Equality Index has grown nearly seven-fold since 2015, expanding from 80 companies in the first year to 542 in 2024. The 2024 edition received a total of 753 submissions from the eight benchmarked countries.
