Allison Lang wants people to know that having a disability doesn’t mean you can’t travel.
The Canadian actress, who was born without the lower half of her left leg, shared her love of travel on Instagram on Thursday, posting a photo of herself on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City wearing a floral red midi dress and black combat boots.
“I want to shatter the perception that people with disabilities don’t leave their homes or like exploring new places,” she wrote in the caption.
Lang said this perception couldn’t be further from the truth.
Lang’s post comes as July marks Disability Pride Month.
The actress, who claims to be confident in her appearance, said people have made sarcastic comments about her abilities.
“People have asked and said things like, ‘Wow, I can’t do that,’ ‘Wow you walked all that way,’ ‘Is it safe to do that?’ ‘Don’t hurt yourself, don’t put that much strain on your body,'” Lang wrote.
“These comments make me feel like they think I can’t do these things because I only have one leg.”
She went on to say that while these comments may stem from the inaccessibility of some spaces, they wouldn’t have been made if she had two legs.
“Until that’s the norm, I’ll keep going out and sharing my adventures,” Lang insisted. “Say it with me: People with disabilities love to travel and explore too.”
The post came after Lang shared a series of photos from New York City in jean shorts, a white button-down shirt and high-top Converse.
The Montreal-based influencer said she walked the city’s 1.45-mile leafy walkway, then visited Chelsea Market and Broadway.
She hinted to her followers that her travel plans don’t end there, as she’s also heading to Europe.
“Stay tuned for more European Run Gun content coming soon,” she wrote.
