Lili Fox, an 18-year-old para-swimmer from Christchurch, New Zealand, is more than just an athlete, she is an example of determination and inspiration. Her journey is one of overcoming obstacles, pushing limits and accepting challenges with determination.

At the age of three, Lili Fox battled leukemia, a virus that left her paralyzed in her right leg and unable to move any muscle. Despite facing challenges at such a young age, she fearlessly embraced life and made the most of every opportunity that came her way.

Lili Fox’s love for swimming began when she started taking swimming lessons and eventually started competing in competitive races. Though she was hesitant to compete at first, with the encouragement of her coach she now competes regularly, showcasing her talent and determination in the pool.

Joining her local Para Fed and swim club gave Lili Fox a supportive environment to grow and thrive. To ensure a fair competition, she participates in the para division at regional, national and international levels and trains alongside non-disabled swimmers, emphasizing the inclusive nature of the sport.

The support of her family, especially her mother and uncle, who are both swimmers, played a major role in Lili Fox’s journey. They gave her the independence to pursue her passion and provided unwavering support along the way.

Aside from her exploits in the pool, Lili Fox also works as a swim coach and lifeguard, giving back to the community that has supported her. Her involvement with Parafed Canterbury’s after-school program allows her to inspire and mentor young athletes, embodying the spirit of giving back.

Lili Fox’s journey is testament to the transformative power of sport. Through swimming, she found confidence, purpose and a sense of belonging. As she pursued her dream of qualifying for the Paralympics and embarked on a career as a paediatric nurse, Lili Fox continues to inspire.
