Wildfires in the United States have burned an area larger than the city of Los Angeles, causing widespread damage.

Officials added that the so-called “Park Fire” is the largest wildfire to burn in California this year and one of more than 100 burning across the country.

Some of this is being driven by hot weather, with climate change causing more frequent lightning strikes as the western U.S. endures scorching heat and extreme dryness.

Millions of people are under air quality warnings in the northwestern United States and western Canada.

The National Joint Fire Center said the Park Fire, burning north of the state capital, Sacramento, had spread to more than 562 square miles (1,455 square kilometers) of inland Northern California.

Many buildings were destroyed and evacuation orders and warnings remain in effect for several communities in several counties. No injuries or deaths have been reported.

As the skies darken with smoke, at least 4,000 firefighters are battling the Park Fire, with more reinforcements being called in.

The National Weather Service said dry weather and strong winds are increasing the fire danger.

Temperatures will continue to drop

Warnings were also issued for large swaths of Idaho, Montana, Utah, Colorado and Wyoming, as well as other parts of California.

Temperatures are expected to cool mid-week, but meteorologists warn that doesn’t mean existing fires will go out.

The Park Fire started Wednesday when authorities said someone pushed a burning car into a ditch in Chico and then fled the scene.

The man suspected of arson was arrested on Thursday and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
