Celebrating Disability Pride Month in the Lowcountry

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — July is recognized as Disability Pride Month, and there will be plenty of events celebrating it across the Lowcountry.

On Saturday, Be the Change Charleston held its second annual Celebration of Empowerment Through Employment at Beyond Distilling Company.

Event organizers say it’s a celebration of the start of the month.

The community was invited to shop from a variety of local vendors, including food and art, and take part in activities such as face painting and sensory areas.

Be The Change Charleston said events like this are important both to create safe spaces and to educate the community.

“I think one of the biggest things we want to get across to people is that it’s really easy to be inclusive, to be kind and to be approachable,” said Haley Tumbleston, director and co-founder of Be the Change Charleston.

“We have people with disabilities and families with children with disabilities in our facilities, and they can come to a space where they feel truly accepted,” she added.

“So if they have sensory differences or are feeling overwhelmed, we have designated zones where they can just step away.”

If you can’t make it to Saturday’s event, there are several celebrations you can enjoy throughout the month.

July 13th is Disabled Pride Mix and Mingle, July 20th is Charleston’s only 100% inclusive wrestling show, and July 26th is the 4th Annual Disabled Pride Finale Celebration.
