CICOA Seeks Volunteers to Assist Seniors and Disabled – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Transportation

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The start of summer brings sunshine, barbecues and outdoor fun. But it can also be a season of isolation for seniors. CICOA Aging and In-Home Solutions is a nonprofit organization in need of volunteers to help seniors and people with disabilities.

CICOA Chief Financial Officer Michael Johnson joined Daybreak on Thursday.

“We primarily support seniors over 60, but anyone with a disability, regardless of age, we try to enable them to continue living in their own home with as much independence and dignity as possible,” Johnson said.

Johnson says several types of volunteers are needed.

Senior Fellows:

Call or visit your senior regularly to check in and chat with them. Have a senior buddy to accompany them to shopping trips and appointments. Social connections improve both mental and physical health.

Healthy produce:

Distribute produce boxes at meal locations twice a month (during lunch hours) Assist clients with monthly weight and blood pressure checks (no medical background required).

Pet Connect:

They collect pet food and supplies from CICOA partner pantries and deliver them to seniors and their pets who are unable to leave their homes.

Johnson said CICOA does not have the space to store food and supplies, but monetary donations are always welcomed to help them purchase needed items.

People can also help the elderly and people with disabilities by simply being kind neighbors.

“Call them, join a barbecue or reach out to seniors who like to cook their own food and invite them to cook a meal and bring it over. Connect with them. Don’t forget about them. Some seniors may not have transportation or health conditions that allow them to get out, so setting up visiting hours can also be very helpful,” Johnson said.

He also encourages people to help with household chores like cleaning porches or installing railings so neighbors can safely sit outside and socialize. Johnson said rides to appointments and grocery stores can also be beneficial for seniors and people with disabilities.
