“I think it probably gave us more confidence to be able to do things we didn’t think we could do,” says Lucy, Delta 7’s drummer and singer.
The seven-piece band, described by advocacy group Community Interest Company (CIC) as a post-punk rock ensemble, is celebrating its 10th anniversary.
The group, based in Eastbourne, East Sussex, has members with different disabilities.
“As one of the other band members says, it’s possible,” Lucy continued.
Julia Roberts, from Brighton-based Culture Shift CIC, said the band developed following a 10-week music course in 2014.
She told BBC Radio Sussex’s Danny Pike: “It’s not something we planned, it just happened naturally.”
“It’s hard to believe it’s already been 10 years. We all feel it’s a great achievement.”
A Culture Shift spokesperson said the group was born out of “a shared love of performing, positive energy and mutual support”.
Delta 7 is currently funded by the People’s Health Trust, with money raised through Health Lottery South East.
“We’ve played some really amazing venues and we’ve been nominated for a BAFTA award,” said Fraser, who plays drums and sings in the band.
“We hope that Delta 7 will continue and that we will be able to raise more funding.”
Another band member, Craig, said his favorite thing about being in a band is “the camaraderie, everyone is amazing.”
The group has also been featured in Rosie Baldwin’s documentaries “Delta 7even” and “We Rise,” and they also host workshops for those wanting to learn songwriting and musicianship.
The group will celebrate their anniversary with a gig at Think Port Club in Uckfield on June 14th.
