The Asia Center for the Prevention of Elder Abuse held its third annual Elder Abuse Walk on Saturday to coincide with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – ADRC held its third annual Elder Abuse Walk on Saturday in conjunction with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
Elder abuse is on the rise in Wisconsin, with more than 10,000 reported cases in 2023, Adult Protective Services (APS) Superintendent Zach Trebelhorn said.
There’s also been an increase locally, according to Trebelhorn: In 2023, there were 320 reports of seniors to APS.
Trebelhorn said this is not something that can’t be prevented without the cooperation of the community.
“This effort and all the work we do is going to depend on the public, and it can’t happen without that awareness,” he said. “The public can be the eyes and ears for seniors, and if they notice something, they can reach out and speak up, so someone can respond and help mitigate the risk, not just today, but for years and decades to come.”
Also participating in the walk were the Y on the Fly van, Drift Cycle and the Grumpy Old Men Band.
