Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has announced he will run for Governor of California in 2026.
He posted a video on Tuesday, July 23, expressing his hopes of returning.
“California is a state where anything is possible with hard work and determination. But our future depends on our willingness to take on our biggest challenges,” Villaraigosa said in the video. “I believe we need problem solvers to lead our state, and that’s why I’m running for governor.”

The 71-year-old ran for governor in 2018 but ultimately lost to Gavin Newsom.
In his statement, he highlighted his record as a problem solver during his time as a California state Assembly member and as mayor of Los Angeles in 2005, according to the release.
Villaraigosa is the 41st mayor of Los Angeles and the first Latino to serve as mayor since 1872.
According to a press release, “From his first year in office to his last, violent crime decreased by 48 percent, making Los Angeles one of the safest large cities in America.”
