The late Gerald Colcord left an enormous mark on Southern California throughout his illustrious career. Often referred to as “Hollywood’s society architect,” Colcord designed hundreds of homes throughout Los Angeles, including homes designed for or later owned by A-listers such as Madonna, Harrison Ford, and Richard Chamberlain. Now, one of the late architect’s creations has returned to the market for just under $17 million.
Located in Palos Verdes Estates, about 30 miles from Downtown Los Angeles, the 6,872-square-foot chateau-style home is listed with Lily Land of Strand Hill Properties/Forbes Global Properties. Originally called “Les Ailes de la Mer” (The Wings of the Sea), the beachfront residence sits on a whopping 33,000-square-foot lot and offers breathtaking views of the Southern California coastline that stretches all the way to Malibu.

Built in 1970, the property is tucked behind gates that open directly onto a spacious cobblestone motor court. A gorgeous space inspired by French country homes, the interior is packed with period touches, including stucco ceilings, ornate moldings, custom pieces, leaded-glass windows, parquet floors, and wrought-iron accents.

Overall, the residence features seven bedrooms, seven full bathrooms, and two half bathrooms. The main floor features a spacious living room with French doors that open to a private outdoor terrace. Additionally, this level also features a formal dining room, library, and a recently remodeled chef’s kitchen complete with a pantry and top of the line appliances. Additionally, the main suite has its own wing, complete with his and her bathrooms, and access to the residence’s garden and backyard pool.

Another bedroom and bathroom are tucked away on the lower level, which also houses a wine cellar and an entertainment room with a very cool stone fireplace, while the remaining bedrooms are found upstairs.
“This is truly a rare opportunity not to be missed,” the ad states. Colcord, who died in 1984, worked in a variety of architectural styles, from Hollywood Regency to Spanish haciendas. Today, his work can be seen in the Brentwood, Bel-Air and Westwood neighborhoods of Los Angeles, and still attracts big-name entertainers. Most famously, Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe owned one of his mansions before their divorce. Nicolas Cage also famously moved into a Colcord-designed English Tudor mansion once owned by Dean Martin and Tom Jones.
