Helping people with learning disabilities feel understood during Learning Disabilities Week

Untitled Design (23)

Learning Disabilities Week runs from Monday 17th June to Sunday 23rd June. The annual awareness week, organised by Mencap, highlights the realities and barriers faced by people living with a learning disability.

This year’s theme is “Can You See Me?” – it’s about being seen, heard and valued.

To help staff and students gain understanding and celebrate what people with learning disabilities bring to society, the Learning Disability Nursing team invited local health and social care services onto campus.

The stall is located in the Undercroft of the Hawthorn Building from Monday to Thursday from 10am to 3pm – no bookings necessary, just pop in!

Information and resources are provided as follows:

Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Adult Social Care Services Leicester Royal Infirmary Emergency Department Boobettes from ‘Coppafeel!’ and local bowel and breast screening services DMU Audiology, Emergency Medicine and SALT teams (providing hearing tests and tours inside ambulances) DECODE research team Colleagues involved in the STOMP agenda

Resources from these services aim to educate staff and students about the needs of people with learning disabilities.

People with learning disabilities can join us on Wednesday the 19th.
