Los Angeles City Council votes to end COVID-19 vaccination policy for city employees


City employees who quit or were fired for not following the City of Los Angeles’ 2021 vaccination policy can now reapply for their jobs.

The Los Angeles City Council voted Tuesday to provide a path to reinstatement for the roughly 86 affected employees.

The City Council also voted Tuesday to lift the city’s policy requiring city employees to get the COVID-19 vaccination.

City council members unanimously approved an ordinance to end the vaccination policy for all current and future city employees, retroactive to June 2, following a recommendation from the city’s Executive Employee Relations Committee.

Workers who resign or are fired under this policy may reapply for the position, but there is no guarantee they will be given the job. The hiring process will continue as normal and will be handled by department managers.

The City of Los Angeles lifted its COVID-19 state of emergency declaration in February 2023 and also eliminated the requirement for COVID-19 testing for unvaccinated City of Los Angeles employees.

In May 2023, the federal government also declared an end to the COVID-19 public health emergency.

In 2023, several Southern California cities, including Long Beach, San Diego and Pasadena, have phased out requirements for workers to get the COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment. Additionally, Los Angeles County, Orange County, the University of California system and the Los Angeles Unified School District have also eliminated such requirements.
