Los Angeles ends COVID-19 vaccine mandate after three years delay

Remember the anti-science fanaticism that led to policies dictated by irrational COVID panic, the direct effects of which continued all the way through 2024, years after common sense should have prevailed?

The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to repeal the COVID-19 vaccination requirement for city employees. In other words, the council will continue to require COVID-19 vaccinations for city employees through late 2021, 2022, 2023 and mid-2024, removing firefighters, police officers and other city employees from duty for “two years, nine months and 22 days,” according to one lawyer.

This happened despite the fact that we knew very early on in the pandemic (before vaccines were widely available) that the virus was particularly deadly only to older people and adults with underlying health conditions, and that it was these people who should be protected from the virus, rather than children or fit, healthy adults.

However, we also knew by December 2021 that the vaccines do not stop the spread of the virus and do not prevent infection. This means that even though we knew by December 2021, shortly after Los Angeles enacted this vaccination mandate, that mandating the vaccination of people who are not at serious risk from the virus does not protect vulnerable people, Los Angeles kept the mandate in place for another two and a half years.

These corona panic policies are why so many people have had a hard time during the pandemic. School closures have no scientific basis (even for teachers) and we knew that by March 2021. Mask and social distancing rules are inconsistent and former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Anthony Fauci admitted two weeks ago that they have no scientific basis. Vaccination mandates for employment are also baseless and we’ve known that since at least December 2021, yet people have lost years of work because of them, and in Los Angeles people remained unemployed until Tuesday.

Politicians like those on the Los Angeles City Council have made decisions driven by fear and ordinary people have paid the price for years. The damage and knock-on effects of these decisions will be felt for years to come, and politicians should be held accountable for it all.
