Grants Pass decision criticized for perpetuating inequities and risks for LGBTQ+ people
The Los Angeles LGBT Center strongly criticized the Supreme Court’s decision in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, which allowed US cities to criminalize homelessness. The center’s statement highlighted the harmful impact the decision has on marginalized communities, including LGBTQ+ people.
“The Los Angeles LGBT Center condemns the recent Supreme Court decision in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, which allows U.S. cities to criminalize homeless individuals. This decision not only perpetuates systemic injustice, but also exacerbates the everyday risks faced by marginalized communities, including LGBTQ+ people,” the statement read.
The Center argues that the ruling undermines fundamental human rights by discriminating against vulnerable individuals who already have limited access to housing and supportive services. The Center points out that housing is a basic human need, like sleep or food, and emphasizes that flaws in the system mean many people lack the means to afford these necessities.
“Our nation must decide whether to strive to enhance our collective humanity or choose to embrace cruelty. Today’s decision is clearly a step toward cruelty that, if unchecked, will have devastating consequences,” the statement continued.
The Los Angeles LGBT Center, which provides purpose-built housing for LGBTQ+ youth and seniors, expressed solidarity with those affected by the ruling and called for compassionate, comprehensive solutions to address the root causes of homelessness.
“We emphasize the urgent need for compassionate, comprehensive solutions that address the root causes of homelessness, rather than punitive measures that perpetuate cycles of poverty and discrimination,” said Terra Russell Slavin, chief impact officer at the Los Angeles LGBT Center.
