Violent clashes broke out between pro-Palestinian demonstrators and pro-Israel counter-demonstrators outside a Los Angeles synagogue on Sunday.
Los Angeles Police Officer Tony Yim told the Los Angeles Times that several dozen pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside the Adas Torah synagogue in the Pico-Robertson neighborhood around 11 a.m.
They were soon confronted by counter-demonstrators, and the two groups clashed, shoving and punching, with police saying one person was arrested in the melee.
No details were released about those arrested, but the Times reported that those arrested were suspected of possessing “spiked flags,” which are banned at protests.
A video shared on X (formerly Twitter) showed chaotic scenes with dozens of people fighting in the street outside the synagogue.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the violence “abhorrent” in a press release.
“I want to be clear that Los Angeles will not be a hotbed of anti-Semitism or violence. Those responsible will be found and held accountable,” she said.
She said she has asked the Los Angeles Police Department to conduct additional patrols in the area.
