LeBron James is America’s flag bearer.

Lakers star LeBron James was voted on by members of the U.S. Olympic team to carry the American flag during the opening ceremony.

“It is an incredible honor to represent the United States on this global stage, especially at this moment that can bring the entire world together,” James said in a statement Monday after being announced as the flag bearer. For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything not only to me, but to my family, the kids back home, my teammates, my fellow Olympians and so many people across the country who have lofty aspirations. Sports have the power to bring us all together and I am proud to be a part of this important moment.”

James is the third basketball player and the first man to serve as the U.S. flag bearer. The Paris Olympics will mark the 39-year-old James’ fourth Olympic Games. James was part of the U.S. men’s basketball teams that won gold medals in 2008 and 2012 and was part of the bronze medal-winning team in 2004.
