What are real and material obligations?

Substantial and essential duties are those activities that are necessary to perform the job and cannot be reasonably omitted or altered. This, along with your income at the time of your disability, are important considerations when filing a claim. If you are unsure of the type of compensation that is appropriate for your occupation, speak to an advisor.

How much disability insurance do doctors and dentists need?

How much physician disability insurance can I receive, and when can I receive it?

Many physicians purchase their first disability insurance policy during their residency (or when they start working as a dentist), which typically covers a little more than their current income. This is because your salary may increase significantly in the future. As your income increases, you will want your disability insurance benefits to increase as well. With that in mind, getting a policy that offers additional purchase benefits can allow you to purchase more disability insurance2 without having to take another medical exam. Talk to your advisor about how to get the right coverage at the right time.

What happens if I file a claim with Physician Disability Insurance?

Policy details vary from company to company, so make sure your policy defines disability based on your regular medical occupation. Believe it or not, some policies only pay benefits if you can’t perform any occupation. Next, ask how many ways you can qualify for total disability. Many policies define total disability in only one way. Our Medical True Own Occupation option offers multiple ways, allowing more flexibility, especially in situations where your disability prevents you from performing some but not all of your job duties.
