Rep. Malliotakis hands out big federal check to local disability group

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island/South Brooklyn) has secured $750,000 for a local organization dedicated to disability support and services, detailed in a written statement.

Lifestyles for the Disabled, an organization that has served people with disabilities on Staten Island for the past 30 years, plans to use the money to purchase a trailer and upgrade its existing facilities to better meet ADA standards.

The trailers will be used as a training area, the statement said.

“For over 25 years, Lifestyles for the Disabled has been serving people with developmental disabilities in our community, providing them with the opportunity to grow and thrive in realistic work environments throughout Staten Island,” said Malliotakis. “We are proud to have secured $750,000 in federal funding to help this great organization purchase a new mobile training facility for their Green House program and make their facility more ADA compliant. Over 400 families in our community have benefited from the workforce training provided by Lifestyles for the Disabled, and we are proud to support their work in helping people with developmental disabilities reach their full potential.”

The check from the federal government was donated to Lifestyles for the Disabled’s spring plant sale.

“We are so grateful that Rep. Malliotakis has joined ‘Lifestyles’ in changing the perception of the Willowbrook campus,” said Greg Mikalauskas, director of development/facilities for Lifestyles for Disabilities. “The funding she secured for people with developmental disabilities in the Green House program is a component of the ‘Willowbrook Plan’ and part of our vision for the future benefits the campus has to offer.”

The organization is located in Building 12-G at 930 Willowbrook Road, near the campus of the College of Staten Island.
