Retired Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Goes Missing While Hiking on Greek Island

A search is underway for a retired Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who went missing after going on a hike on the Greek island of Almogos earlier this week.

Albert Kalibet, 59, was last seen hiking on the island of Almorgos on Tuesday afternoon, according to a social media post from Amorgos authorities. Amorgos authorities said he was following the route from the Asfontirite area towards Katapola when he went missing.

A State Department spokesperson said in a statement to CBS News on Thursday that the department is aware of reports of Carivet’s disappearance and is “working closely with local authorities as they conduct the search effort.”

“The Greek Missing Persons Alert Program has issued a notification regarding this incident,” a State Department spokesman said.

The exact circumstances of his disappearance are unclear.

“Kalivet is well known on the island” and has been visiting for several years, Kalliope Despotidi, deputy mayor of Amorgos, told Greek Reporter.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement Thursday that Calibet was an experienced hiker and offered to assist the suspect’s family while authorities tracked him down.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Deputy Carivet’s family and friends and we hope he returns home safely,” Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said. “We are actively working with multiple agencies overseas to assist in the search for Deputy Carivet and will use all available means to bring him back to his loved ones.”

The ministry said its homicide unit would be in charge of the case on the ground while Greek authorities carried out search and rescue operations.

Carivet joined the Sheriff’s Department in April 1998. He officially retired in 2018 but continued working as a part-time officer to help alleviate staffing shortages, the LASD said.

The body of British television presenter Dr. Michael Mosley was found on the Greek island of Symi on Sunday, four days after he too went missing while hiking. His wife told the Associated Press that he had taken a wrong turn and fallen. According to BBC News, Greek police said an initial autopsy found no trauma that would have caused his death and initially considered it to be natural causes.
