A graduation ceremony at the Walt Disney Concert Hall on Thursday evening saw riots and a possible shooting occur both inside and outside the concert venue.
The Los Angeles County Probation Department said in a statement late Thursday that the department co-hosted a graduation ceremony that night for 100 high school students, including 29 youths in its custody.
At the end of the ceremony, a local resident jumped from a second-floor balcony and attacked the graduating class, all of whom had already left the auditorium and were in a secure holding area.
“The Probation Special Enforcement Unit responded swiftly, containing the incident and restoring order within the auditorium,” the statement said.
However, a fight then broke out outside. Four people were detained pending further investigation, the Probation Service said.
Los Angeles Police Department officers who responded to reports of a riot found evidence of gunfire near the concert hall but no injuries.
According to Los Angeles Police Officer Kevin Terzes, police were dispatched to the 100 block of Grand Avenue just after 6 p.m. for a report of a group fight and possible shooting.
Officers recovered shell casings at the scene but did not find any victims, Tertzes said, adding it was unclear exactly where the shell casings were found.
Grand Avenue and Hope Street were closed between 1st and 2nd streets Thursday night as the investigation unfolded.
The Probation Department did not explain what led to the assault indoors or the fight outdoors.
