The search in Greece for a retired Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who went missing while hiking has ended, his brother confirmed to KTLA.
Albert Carivet, 59, of Hermosa Beach, went missing on the Greek island of Amorgos on June 11. The island was experiencing a heatwave at the time, with temperatures reaching 97 degrees.
After he didn’t return from his hike several weeks later, family, friends and volunteers from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department traveled to Amorgos to help with the search.
Ms. Carivet’s brother, Oliver, said in a statement Monday that the search had been called off.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the end of the search for our beloved Albert,” Mr Oliver said. “Despite our tireless efforts and determination, Albert remains missing.”

Oliver added that they had found “no evidence whatsoever” of Albert on the island and had received little support from the Greek government or the US embassy. He said he planned to remain in Europe in case any new information emerged.
Robin Winston, a friend of Albert’s, told KTLA that Amorgos, which is about half the size of Catalina, is difficult to access because it has few resources and no airport. Oliver said the search team left the island out of fear for their safety after the long hike, leaving them exhausted.
“We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has sent their thoughts and prayers,” Oliver said. “Your support has helped us through this incredibly difficult time. We also want to thank the search and rescue teams who assisted us and those who donated to GoFundMe to make the search and rescue efforts possible. We truly hoped for a different outcome.”
