Search continues for former Los Angeles deputy sheriff missing in Greece

The search continues for a former California sheriff’s deputy who went missing while vacationing in Greece on Tuesday, as a second American tourist is reportedly also missing.

Albert Calivet, who retired from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in 2018, went missing after preparing to travel to the Greek island of Amorgos, which his family said he had visited multiple times since 2009. A missing person’s report was filed after Calivet did not meet up with friends.

“He knows the streets, he knows the island,” family friend Robin Leon told NBC News NOW. “The mayor knows Albert, everyone in the cafe knows Albert. Everybody loves Albert.”

Amorgos city authorities said in a Facebook post that Kalibet, 59, had been following a route from the Asfontirite region to the village of Katapola. Authorities said he was wearing Bermuda shorts and a black shirt at the time of his disappearance.

“Every hour that passes, every minute, every hour, it makes me sadder,” Carivet’s sister-in-law, Sandrine Catreit, told NBC News NOW.

Just days after Kalibet’s disappearance, another American tourist was reported missing in Greece. ABC News reported that the unidentified man was last seen on Tuesday at a tavern in Matraki, west of Corfu, where he was staying with friends.

The friend returned home on Thursday to find the door open, the lights on and the air conditioner running, and called police, according to the outlet. Investigators said the missing man’s identification and travel documents were missing, ABC News reported.

Both disappearances came days after Greek authorities discovered the body of British television presenter and healthy living advocate Michael Mosley on a rocky shore on the Greek island of Symi.

Mosley, 67, was reported missing last week after going out for a walk alone in the heat and never returned. Investigators said the cause of death was natural causes.
