Senator Ossoff Pushes for Better Support for People with Disabilities in Georgia

WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is working to improve the quality of life for Georgians with disabilities.

This week, Senator Ossoff began campaigning for passage of the Ensuring National Access to a Better Living Experience (ENABLE) Act, a bill he co-sponsored with Senators Eric Schmitt (R-MO) and Bob Casey (D-PA) that would expand tax benefits for people with disabilities and help them save for future expenses. The expanded tax benefits are currently set to expire next year.

This bipartisan bill would allow individuals with disabilities who contribute to an Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) account to continue to qualify for up to $1,000 of the nonrefundable savings tax credit.

ABLE accounts are tax-advantaged savings programs established in 2014 to allow individuals with disabilities to save for an array of expenses, including education, housing, transportation, assistive technology and personal support services, and health care.

The bill would also increase the amount that working people with disabilities can contribute to these accounts and allow tax-free rollovers of funds from 529 plans into these accounts.

“I am committed to bringing Republicans and Democrats together to improve the lives of Georgians with disabilities,” said Senator Ossoff.

Nearly one in three Georgians has a disability, and 32 percent of the state’s health care costs are related to disability-related expenses, according to CDC data.

According to a recent report from the National Association of State Treasurers, there are 158,421 ABLE accounts open nationwide, with an average savings of $9,788.

Senator Ossoff continues to work to support Georgians with disabilities.

In May, Senators Ossoff and Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) introduced the bipartisan “Think Differently Database Act,” which would direct the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to develop a comprehensive website that provides accessible information and resources for people with disabilities in Georgia.

In January, Senator Ossoff held a press conference in Decatur to brief Georgia veterans and small business owners on the bipartisan Invest in Veterans Act, which was signed into law as part of the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act to increase opportunities for disabled veteran small business owners.
