HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Local nonprofit SOS Care has launched the “Ally Program” for adults with autism and intellectual disabilities.
Oak Tree Farm is a complex established by the group and is located on Medlen Parkway near Highway 501 in Conway.
News 13 last reported on the organization in March when the third phase of the Oak Tree Farm community was completed.
There are currently 77 residents living in the complex and authorities are asking for their cooperation.
“This is someone who is not just a parent, and there is no other reason than they want to do this on their own, they want to figure this out for themselves, and we want to help them do that,” says Cathy Grace, director of marketing and events for SOS Cares.
She says the influx of new residents has inspired her and her team to start a new program.
“What’s most interesting is that they’re so proud of their independence and want a little advice and help.”
Grace said the Ally Program welcomes local members to come alongside residents and help them make the transition to a more independent life.
News 13 spoke with Oak Tree Farm resident Daniel Lucas.
“I’ve done a lot here. I learned how to change the batteries in a smoke detector, I cleaned, I lived with roommates, we cooked together, we had fun.”
Grace said those interested will undergo a free background check and, if approved, will be paired with one or two residents who have disabilities.
“At Oak Tree Farm we have both men and women and a wide range of ages, from 18 to 60, so there’s someone for everyone,” Grace says.
Lucas has lived in the complex since it opened in April and said he’s already learned a lot.
“Basically getting to know people here has had a big impact on me. I’ve met a lot of people I’d never met before.”
Grace says she has watched the affordable housing community grow since SOS Care began developing it about seven years ago.
“You’re going to impact the life of someone with a disability. You’re going to see them become independent for the first time in their life, and there’s nothing like that.”
Grace says they don’t have a specific number of collaborators they’re looking for, but encourage people with a heart for service to apply.
