The Greens are urging the Government to give a voice to Tasmanians with disability.
We call on Premier Rockliff and Minister Palmer to attend upcoming public hearings on the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Getting the NDIS Back on Track No. 1) Bill 2024. The proposed changes to the NDIS could significantly restrict access to vital services for Tasmanians with disability.
These hearings provide the perfect forum for the State Government to advocate for the needs and rights of the 26% of Tasmanians living with a disability.
Due to concerns from both the federal Greens and Liberal parties, the bill has been referred to an inquiry by the Community Affairs Legislative Committee. It is vital that the voice of Tasmanians is heard at this inquiry. All state and territory governments will have the opportunity to submit evidence, and public hearings are scheduled for 24 and 25 July.
The Liberal government often criticises federal Labor for not providing enough support for key disability services in the state through NDIS funding, and if the Rockliff government is serious about lobbying Labor for better terms, now is its time.
With key disability services losing Federal Government funding, now is the time for the State Government to push for better conditions for people living with disability in Tasmania.
“With a major disability rights bill due to be debated in Parliament, not attending would be a massive signal of this Government’s true priorities. Premier Palmer and his Minister have a chance to show they are willing to fight for the rights of disabled Tasmanians. The Greens urge them to follow through.”
