Temperatures are expected to reach triple digits in parts of Los Angeles County from Friday through early next week, and the National Weather Service plans to issue heat watches through the weekend.
The warning is in effect from 10 a.m. Saturday to 8 p.m. Sunday for the Santa Clarita, San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys, where forecasters say temperatures could reach 101 degrees Fahrenheit.
Experts said it’s important to drink plenty of water and protect your skin from the heat.
“Having a sunburn once in your lifetime doubles your chances of getting melanoma,” says Dr. Anna Guanche, dermatologist and founder of the Bella Skin Institute, “which is the deadliest type of skin cancer.”
She said the UV index determines how likely someone is to get sunburned during a heatwave.
“If the UV index is between 3 and 5, it can take 30 to 45 minutes to cause a sunburn,” she added. “If it’s 11 or above, damage can occur within 10 minutes.”
A heat advisory will be in effect from Saturday morning through Sunday evening for the San Gabriel Mountains, the Antelope Valley foothills and along the 14 Freeway.
Temperatures are expected to rise each day through the weekend, with above-normal temperatures expected starting Friday, making it possible for temperatures to become dangerously hot over the weekend, “especially in mountain areas and the Antelope Valley,” the NWS said.
Daytime high temperatures on Friday are expected to increase by 2 to 6 degrees, with temperatures expected to reach 100 to 105 in the Antelope Valley and 80s to low 90s in the canyon.
The Los Angeles County Health Department issued a heat watch for the valley area for Saturday and Sunday.
Temperatures will remain the same on Sunday, but forecasters say the heat will ease slightly and could continue into Monday.
