Since 1979, the Los Angeles Gay Men’s Chorus has been singing and dancing throughout Southern California and beyond.
The group formed during the rise of the gay rights movement and is made up of more than 200 volunteer members who perform in concert halls, schools, and at dozens of community events each year.
“The choir is a performing collective unlike any I’ve ever been involved with,” said Executive Director and Producer Lou Spist. “It’s a really fun, inspiring choir, and the people onstage are there because they want to, not because they have to.”
Its members come from a variety of professional backgrounds, including Sheldon Craig-Matthews, a longtime performer turned salesman who joined the company two years ago.
“The best thing about the Gay Men’s Choir is that it provides an incredible entertainment experience,” Sheldon said.
Craig Matthews said not only is it a great entertainment experience, but it’s also exciting for the group.
“It’s really nice to know that there’s someone out there somewhere who’s like, ‘Hey, that’s me.’ There are kids out there who are growing up and seeing us being embraced and having a great time and doing great things and they can do the same.”
And Jeff Mueller, who’s been with the chorus for 10 years. He’s retired from the Air Force and spent half his career under the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. He said the group made him feel welcome from day one.
“It’s been a really interesting experience being in the military and living a double life and not being able to be your true self,” Mueller said. “It’s been really wonderful to be around a group of people who love you and take care of you.”
Mueller said when people watch their show they feel a range of emotions.
“You will laugh, you will cry and you will laugh some more. Something will touch your heart. You will never expect to be moved. Our concerts are just fun,” he said.
The chorus members hope you’ll hear their songs soon.
“There’s nothing else to say other than come and see, come and feel it. I’m sure you’ll love it and leave surprised, delighted and wanting to see more,” Spist added.
The next performance will be at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium on June 30th at 3pm. The concert will feature songs by Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and Dionne Warwick.
