COVINGTON, La. (WGNO) — The Covington Police Department is investigating after two school employees were arrested for allegedly harming a student with disabilities.

According to officers, on May 28, they were called to respond to an incident involving a teacher and a teaching assistant at E.E. Lyon Elementary School.

Two tornadoes were confirmed Tuesday, including an EF-1 near Kentwood.

According to reports, 44-year-old Katherine Manfree and 71-year-old Lauren Brenkel were caught on camera committing acts that “constituted an assault on a vulnerable student.”

Covington police said the footage recorded on the classroom camera proved invaluable due to the nature of the victim’s communication skills.

Police said Mumphrey and Brenkel no longer work at the school and are now charged with felony abuse of a minor.

“The safety of our students is our number one priority and behavior like this will not be tolerated. We took swift and appropriate action to address this situation and are committed to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment in our schools for all of our students,” St. Tammany Parish Public Schools Superintendent Frank Javier said in a statement.

CPD said the investigation is ongoing and police would not be releasing any further details.
