Los Angeles police arrested a man on Friday in connection with a road rage brawl at Los Angeles International Airport that left an elderly woman knocked to the ground and unconscious.
Jathan Givens Sr. was arrested shortly after 10 a.m. by members of the Los Angeles Police Department and Airport Police Special Investigations Unit in the Chesterfield Square area of South Los Angeles.
Givens was booked into the Los Angeles Police Department’s 77th Street Precinct jail on suspicion of felony assault and his bail was set at $50,000, according to online records. Givens is scheduled to make his first court appearance on July 12.
Police said a preliminary investigation indicates Givens, 38, and another man were involved in a physical altercation prior to the fight on May 31. The incident happened at approximately 9:25 a.m.
Surveillance footage shows a man, whom police believe to be Givens, chasing a shirtless man down the sidewalk, then onto the road outside baggage claim, where an elderly woman was standing there while unloading her bags from her car.
Givens and the other man then tackle the woman, and the video shows Givens tackling the other man from behind, knocking the woman face-down to the ground.
The two men are then shown struggling on the ground behind the car, while a woman lies motionless next to them as other people move in to check on her.
Police said the woman, whose identity has not been released, was taken unconscious and in critical condition to hospital. She has since been released. No further details were released about the extent of her injuries.
Police said Givens fled the scene, while another man involved in the fight was arrested, KTLA-TV Channel 5 reported.
“What’s most shocking is that neither of them attempted to render aid after the incident,” LAPD Detective Scott Danielson told the station. “The victim could have been your mom or your grandma.”
